A Tall Ships Race from La Coruņa to Bordeaux

One of the few events worth to be remembered from this poor 2004 summer, is the splendid "Parade of Sail" of the Tall Ships in Antwerp, when leaving on their race to Aalborg, Denmark. Just like in Belgium, millions of people all over North-Western Europe were able to admire the one hundred Tall Ships, the 4000 cadets and the 400 officers from 40 nationalities when they made port calls in Antwerp, Aalborg, Stavanger and Cuxhaven. It made you dream of life at sea on board one of these mighty three- and four-masters. Some years ago, I had the opportunity to join the crew of the Chilean four-master Esmeralda on a memorable journey from La Coruņa in Spain to Bordeaux in France. In this series of feature articles, I recall those wonderful days at sea as a tribute to the Tall Ships Race, which at that time was still sponsored by a Scottish whisky brand.
